channel ident ideas mindmap

As a pair we were stuck between two quite good ideas. We either wanted to do a claymation showing what the college can offer or a pixilation animation of a person spinning into different locations and then finally arriving at CWC.

After flipping a coin we decided to go with the Claymation. To construct this ident we will purposely make the characters demonstrate what CWC can offer. The story is that a bunch of people doing activities like football, photography and reading. The characters that are playing foot ball pass the ball back and forth and unfortunately hit the quite character reading. The characters then continue what they were doing then we will zoom out wards and show the audience the clay figures are playing above the cwc logo.

Channel Idents

1. Using the internet as a research tool, look at a range of TV idents and think about ‘What do they have in common?’ (Check out this website http://www.theidentgallery.com). From your research, write a short description of what a channel idents is and give at least three physical characteristics?

This channel ident is promoting the show 'Being Human'. However short the duration it is very effective. They used the simple logo of 'BBC Three' and animated it to make it seem that it had been attacked by a creature. The short is very dark just like the show more so there is no dialogue making it more spooky. The main characteristics are that it displays the logo, dark music to indicate the show and of course the lacerations across the word' Three'.

BBC 1 channel ident is a lot longer and tells more about what the channel has to offer. Conventionally the short displays the channel name and has a voice over to indicate the shows scheduled on the day. BBC 1 creatively uses many forms of animation to promote the channel making it more attractive. The main characteristics is of course the logo , voice over and visual concepts of the upcoming shows.

ITV goes very simplistic with simple images and a voice over informing the viewers of the upcoming shows and a slight summary of the show before hand. The channel comes across a lot more friendly by displaying rubber ducks in a fair. The main characteristics is that there is a strong viewing of the logo 'ITV' making it clear to audience , the voice over guiding the audience and the simple images of the rubber ducks making the ident friendly.

What are channel idents?

Channel Idents is one way a channel makes their channel more unique and stick out from the rest. idents are a form of advertisements for the channel itself promoting the shows they make. The idents are a form of guidance for the viewer as they conventionally inform the audience about upcoming shows and the scheduling of the rest of the days broadcast. Channels need to make their idents popular just like a viral video because that way they can stay in the interests of their viewers. Conventionally channel idents use a voice over promoting the upcoming shows, the iconic logo of the channel and a short clip to support the channels information. Most of these channel idents use visual representations to support the voice over just incase the viewer did not quite understand. These channel idents also make sure their brand is very dominate to indicate the target audience of the channel.

claymation

Claymation is a form of animation in which the animator makes clay figure to construct a film. One of the first Claymation was called 'Morph' by 'Aardman'. Morph was a character that was created to entertain children with small clips of him doing silly things. Claymation is a simple form of stop motion where you simply move the object ( clay figure) slowly and bit by bit to while taking pictures of each simple movement. By the end of it the pictures would be pushed together to make the illusion that the clay figure is moving. Claymation is very similar to pixilation animation , the zoeltrope and cut out animation. As all these forms of animations are simply made and all give the illusion of moving images.

Aardman was founded in 1972 by Peter Lord and David Sproxton. The company makes the majority of different types of animations aimed at the younger generations.Animation has always been a good form of entertainment for families and young children. But animation is very time consuming. Films like 'Wallace and Gromit and the Ware rabbit' took 5 years to create because for every single movement has to be captured.

In our claymation we wanted a strong story line with a simplistic look . We used three claymation models and made them fight over the phone. We captured every movement to make it seem they were moving. I liked the way our work turned out as it completed out target to make is strong in narrative with the simplistic look.
However I would change the way the lighting was used because the images were quite dark. But this is our first try at claymation and it has ticked criteria.
